Medication Administration

Requirements

What do I have to do to renew my MAT certification?  (check out the MAT News Flash link above).

The regulations will require that any child care program or provider choosing to give medication to children must complete a certification process.  This process requires that a provider or the staff person / people in a center who will be giving medication:

  • Have a current certification in CPR and First Aid that covers the ages of children in the program.

Your CPR certification must match the age(s) of the children you care for.  Community CPR

covers all ages.  Infant/Child CPR covers birth to age 8.  The American Red Cross currently

has a grant to offer Infant/Child CPR to child care providers at no fee.  Call 234-2220 for

dates and details.  Members of Child Care Solution can also take CPR with us.  American Red

Cross CPR certification is good for one year.  You must have current CPR and First Aid certification

before giving medication to children in your child care program.

  • Successfully complete the SUNY MAT (Medication Administration Training)

The MAT (Medication Administration Training) is a specific course which must be taken with

a SUNY-certified instructor.  This is a competency-based course, so participants must pass

written quizzes and demonstrate skills to complete the course.  These tests are open book and do

not require memorization.  Enrollment is limited to 8 participants in each course.  The course is 8

hours.  We have been scheduling these classes since February 2004.   Continue checking the

Additional MAT Dates link listed above for the latest dates available.

You can also make your own arrangements for the MAT course directly with a certified MAT

trainer.  You can find names of MAT trainers and contact information on the SUNY website at:

http://www.tsg.suny.edu/olapps/matlookup/lookup.aspx

  • Have their program's health care plan signed off by a health care consultant and approved by their OCFS licensor or registrar

There is a fee of $115.00 per person for the MAT course through us.

This fee will have to be paid up front by way of check/money order; Visa/MasterCard; cash at our office front desk or submission of the Voucher you received from your SUNY MAT grant and a check to cover the difference.

The fee is non-refundable so make sure you can attend the date you have signed up for.

Scholarships are available through a special fund administered by SUNY.

They are not based on income and are available as follows:
