Early Literacy

 

The Early Literacy Project

Funded by the Central New York Community Foundation's Read Ahead Initiative

 

The Early Literacy Project is a comprehensive, researched-based and field tested program designed to increase the literacy skills of children in child care centers and family child care programs.  The program activities will be scheduled over about a six to eight month period.  The long term benefits resulting from each center's or family child care program's participation will positively impact everyone - staff, children and families.

 

Project Activities

  • Classroom Observation and Technical Assistance

  • Comprehensive Early Literacy Workshop Series - 9 Sessions covering the New York State Education Department's English Language Arts Learning Standards for Preschoolers in the areas of:

    • Listening

    • Speaking

    • Reading

    • Writing

  • Literacy Coach Training

  • Literacy Action Plan development for both participating classrooms and the center

  • Eligibility to write and apply for an Early Literacy Mini Grant sponsored by The Central New York Community Foundation

  • participating early childhood educators will be invited to "post graduate" literacy trainings and other opportunities

Timeline

February 2006

Each center registering for the project will receive a commitment letter for participation

Schedule and complete pre-observation visits using ELLCO

February - April 2006 Literacy series of 9 workshops
March 2006

On-site visits for technical assistance

Project staff and directors will select a Literacy Coach for each center

May 2006 Literacy Coach Trainings
May - June 2006

Apply for mini-grants

Post-observation visits using ELLCO

June - October 2006 Follow-up activities to be determined

Additional Early Literacy Project Services

  • Early Literacy workshops on a variety of topics that support developmentally appropriate practice and cover the New York State Education Department's English Language Arts Learning Standards for Preschoolers in the areas of:

    • Listening

    • Speaking

    • Reading

    • Writing

  • Early literacy resources for working with families to enhance the literacy rich home

  • An Early Literacy Program Train the Trainer workshop for curriculum coordinators, staff developers and directors covering basic early literacy topics

  • Technical assistance, information and resources related to early literacy issues
