Understanding
Shyness in Young Children What Research Can Tell Us

Scientists
tell us that some people have a genetic tendency to be shy.
How this tendency is reflected in children’s personality
and behavior, however, is shaped by the child’s environment.
This is important to those of us who work with young children
because classrooms and group settings are often sources of anxiety
for children who are shy.
Join us to learn the latest information on this important
topic and ways you can offer environments and interactions that help
shy children.

Quality
A$$e$$ment as a Basis for Accessing Grant$
Wednesday,
September 27
|
More
and more, organizations who give grants want to know that their money is
well spent.
One way they determine this is by requiring applicants to tell
how they will measure the impact of the funding.
This is where quality assessment tools can really help.
Quality assessment tools such as the Clifford and Harms
Environmental Rating Scale and the Early Language and Literacy Classroom
Observation make it possible to measure improvement in a concrete way.
This kind of assessment is used in two of Child Care Solutions’
Programs – Child Care Safe and Sound and the Early Literacy Project.
They can also be used as the basis for applying for funding
through other funders.
In this workshop we will take you through the process of using
quality assessment tools as the basis for your requests for funding for
a variety of programs and from a variety of funders.
This workshop is a must for people who want to increase their
grantwriting skills and for people who want to increase their ability to
get grants. Presenter:

Children and the Fine Arts

we think of music and art for young children, what usually comes to mind
are songs and art projects that are "just so darn cute."
Some really great thinkers including Lillian Katz, Mary Ann Kohl and
Anita Olds really challenge us, however, to think beyond
"cute" and to begin thinking in terms of
"beauty". In this set of workshops, we would like to
look at how the fine arts - music art and drama can be incorporated into
the lives of children in early childhood settings.

Young
children spontaneously become involved in dramatic play as an
enjoyable way to resolve internal conflicts, problem solve,
address important questions, and try on different roles they
observe from the social relationships with others in their
life.
This section of the Saturday series will focus on Drama
in the child care setting which is not limited to the dramatic
play area.
We will share
many ways to enrich drama through storytelling, language
activities, songs, and outdoor play.
We will also look at how and why indicators of child
abuse often show up in children’s dramatic play.

The
Visual Arts for Young Children
Saturday,
November 4th |
|
Spend
an exciting day with Amy who has a fine arts degree learning
how you can use master art works in many forms such as books,
posters and even postcards to—to create beauty in your
environment and to use
as a way to develop curiosity, observation skills, vocabulary
in young children. You
will help children to appreciate the beauty of everyday scenes
that have been painted by the hands of a master artist.
This approach is used extensively in
Italy
and we’d love to introduce it to you.
Join us for a day of true beauty – and then take
beauty back to your program!

Heart
& Soul: Music and Dance for Young Children
Saturday,
November 18th |
|
What’s
on your CD player?
Young children love “children’s songs” and there
is nothing wrong with having a good collection of them.
When it comes to music, children need even more; they
need the opportunity to hear a rich variety of music by many
artists and composers and folk music from all kinds of
cultures – and not just our favorite music!
People have been dancing since the dawn of civilization
to express themselves, to add to the enjoyment of music, to
tell stories and just for the sheer pleasure of moving!
In this workshop we will help you incorporate all kinds
of music into your day – and help you develop all kinds of
opportunities for children to dance, dance, dance. | | |
